Forcing Function
Forcing Function
A forcing function is a constraint deliberately imposed to compel a decision or behavior that would otherwise be deferred. In the wiki it surfaces most explicitly in Capital Allocator Mindset, where a budget constraint is framed as “a forcing function for prioritization.” The logic: stated interest is cheap and feels unlimited, but asking “what would you put dollars towards?” forces an allocation, collapsing the gap between felt interest and revealed priority. The scarcity is artificial but productive — it makes you choose.
The concept generalizes beyond capital allocation: any imposed limit (a deadline, a fixed budget, a word count, a single bet) that converts an open-ended, low-stakes question into a binding one that surfaces real priorities. It connects to Scarcity as the premise and Focus as the outcome.
