Five and Ten

A contemporary biography of Frank Winfield Woolworth, the clerk who worked out that a store could make money by pricing everything at a nickel or a dime, putting the goods where customers could handle them, and replicating the format town by town until he had built the first great American chain — and then the tallest building in the world to hold its head office. Winkler wrote it close to the events, which is both the appeal and the caution.
