Financial Services
The industry most directly disrupted by AI Agents in Kyle’s 2026 reading. Two complementary pieces — Matt Levine’s “AI Agents Will Pay Attention” (Bloomberg Money Stuff) and Yoni Rechtman’s “Do You Know a Guy” — map the same structural shift from different angles.
The attention-economy thesis
Banks are in the inattention business; agents threaten it. Levine: “The basic story is: AI agents will pay attention for you. They will constantly optimize your financial decisions. This is bad for institutions whose profits depend on your inattention.” Core deposit profitability depends on customers leaving cash in low-yield accounts. An AI agent managing a customer’s finances will move that cash to higher-yielding alternatives, compressing bank spread income.
Every consumer financial product contains hidden subsidies funded by inattentive users. Rechtman (Yoni Rechtman in “Do You Know a Guy”): credit card rewards funded by interchange; mortgage servicer profits from sticky borrowers who don’t refi; bank spread on deposit inertia. These flow from the many (inattentive) to the few (attentive). AI agents make everyone attentive — the cross-subsidy collapses.
Morgan Stanley estimates AI agents could double mortgage refinancing frequency. Mechanism: friction removal. Refi today requires intentional steps; an agent pre-stages everything and executes on instruction.
Apollo has speculated that AI agents could trigger bank runs — not from panic but from simultaneous optimization.
Who benefits
Brokerages are in the “action business” — more trades = more commission income. Robinhood’s “Loops” agentic trading product exemplifies this: configure an objective, and the agent runs the trading strategy autonomously.
Custom Indexing (per Patrick O’Shaughnessy’s O’Shaughnessy Asset Management thesis) is another beneficiary: individualized strategies at scale, each tailored to a specific client’s needs.
What survives
Rechtman’s “knowing a guy” thesis: relationship-based advantages (the deal that isn’t publicly listed, the variance in outcome between mediocre and excellent execution, human judgment in ambiguous situations) retain value precisely because agents can’t replicate them. The optimization layer commoditizes; the differentiation moves to Social Capital.
