Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning
Learning by doing — acquiring skills through real work and self-directed projects rather than through lectures or facts alone. In The Expertise Economy, it appears as the “on the job” half of a learning culture: “the learning is ‘event-driven,’ meaning that people are taken out of their jobs to learn new skills, or a company will use a blended approach where they learn both through more structured learning and also on the job.”
In Your Passion, Your Solution (YPYS) it is the program’s core pedagogy. YPYS is designed as a year-long developmental program that teaches social innovation and social entrepreneurship “through experiential learning” — students take an issue they care about and work to alleviate it through self-directed projects, supported by workshops, mentors, investors, and a collaborative community. The YPYS thesis is that students want to contribute but lack know-how, resources, support, and social understanding; the experiential curriculum supplies all four. Its pilot is explicitly built to isolate how much workshops versus lectures actually drive outcomes — a test of experiential method against passive instruction.
