Eugenics

Eugenics surfaces in Kyle’s wiki through Brave New World, where the World State’s reproductive machinery is the book’s opening image of engineered humanity. Children are not born but “decanted,” predestined and conditioned into fixed castes — Alphas down to Epsilons — through Bokanovsky’s Process, which produces “ninety-six identical twins working ninety-six identical machines” and is called “one of the major instruments of social stability.” The biological caste system is deliberately enforced: lower-caste embryos are kept “below par” by oxygen-starvation (“the lower the caste, the shorter the oxygen”), with the brain affected first, so that an Epsilon gets “an Epsilon environment as well as an Epsilon heredity.”

In the book’s logic this engineered breeding is inseparable from Conditioning — the “secret of happiness and virtue” is “liking what you’ve got to do,” achieved by making people “like their un-escapable social destiny.” Brave New World thus reads eugenics not as racial improvement but as a tool of stability: optimize humans into contentment with a predetermined station, eliminating the friction of desire and choice.

Context: Eugenics is the early-20th-century movement aimed at “improving” the human population through controlled reproduction — encouraging reproduction among those deemed fit and discouraging or preventing it among those deemed unfit. Widely promoted in the U.S., U.K., and Scandinavia before being discredited by its association with Nazi racial policy. Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) satirized its industrial-scale aspirations.
