Context: Equity crowdfunding lets a large number of ordinary (often non-accredited) investors buy small equity stakes in early-stage private companies via online platforms — e.g. Republic, Wefunder, SeedInvest — typically enabled in the U.S. by the JOBS Act’s Regulation Crowdfunding. It is part of the broader “democratized access to private markets” theme rather than a fully separate asset class.
