Ender’s Game
Earth, expecting a second war with an insect-like alien species, takes gifted children into an orbital Battle School and trains them in a zero-gravity war game. Andrew “Ender” Wiggin is the best of them, and the book is an unsentimental account of what the adults are willing to do to a child in order to get a commander. It is also a book about simulation — about training against a model of the enemy, and about what happens when the trainee can no longer tell where the model stops.
Context: The first volume of the Ender’s Saga, which a16z place in their top tier. Their note is that the story “really resonates for anyone who felt bullied as a kid, and/or spent most of their childhood playing video games.” Kyle already holds Speaker for the Dead, the sequel, in the anti-library — saved from a separate X thread in June 2026 about first contact as a religious problem.
