Electronic Dance Music Events as Modern-Day Ritual

TL;DR — A transpersonal-psychology study treating EDM events as ritual, with the phenomenology taken seriously.

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies, Vol. 36, Iss. 1 (2017), Article 6.

The authors analyse dance-music events using the vocabulary of ritual studies — liminality, communitas, altered states — and treat participants’ reported experiences as data rather than as something to be explained away.

The interesting move is methodological: applying a framework built for religious practice to a secular commercial event, and finding the structure fits.
