Disney's Three Rooms
Disney’s Three Rooms
Walt Disney’s reputed creative method of physically separating the work of creation into three rooms — the dreamer (unconstrained idea generation), the realist (turning ideas into a workable plan), and the critic (stress-testing what survives) — so that judgment never contaminates invention.
Kyle’s margin note in The Myths of Innovation maps Disney’s three rooms onto Alex Osborn’s sequential stages of Brainstorming: fact finding → idea finding → solution finding. The shared insight is that these are different modes that must be done individually, one at a time — “the great mistake is leaping from facts to solutions, skipping over the play and exploration at the heart of finding new ideas.” Turning off the critic’s filter is the whole point of the idea-finding room. Relates to Idea Killers (premature judgment) and Idea Execution.
