Desirable difficulties is the learning-science thesis at the core of Range: the idea that making learning harder in specific ways produces knowledge that is more durable and more transferable, even though it slows you down and hurts performance in the short term. The book attributes the phrase to psychologist Robert Bjork (coined in 1994) and lists the key techniques — spacing, interleaving, testing, and “making-connections” problems. As Range puts it: “Desirable difficulties like testing and spacing make knowledge stick. It becomes durable. Desirable difficulties like making connections and interleaving make knowledge flexible, useful for problems that never appeared in training. All slow down learning and make performance suffer, in the short term.”
The central warning is to “avoid interpreting current performance as learning” — fast, fluent performance during study often indexes “fast but fleeting progress” rather than mastery.
