Deschooling Society

Ivan Illich, 1971. The root text of the argument that institutional schooling displaces learning rather than delivering it — that, in one modern summary, “schooling had become a substitute for learning… the institution had replaced the activity.”

Why it’s on the list: it is the book every other deschooling argument turns out to be downstream of. John Holt made the case before Illich, John Taylor Gatto after, but Illich is the one who named the mechanism. The case for reading it now rather than the successors is the claim that he was not wrong, only early: the resources his model required did not exist in 1971 and do now.
