Dependencies
Dependencies
One-line definition: The web of external forces whose acceptance your “being right” depends on — “any truth that requires people’s belief in it is, by definition, defined by its dependencies.”
How sources describe it
- Kyle’s central framework in Conviction-Led Contrarianism: being contrarian and right often requires the powers that be to eventually accept that you’re right. A hurricane has no dependencies on you; markets, publishers, regulators, and customers do.
- John Maynard Keynes: “markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent” — the quintessential dependency.
- The three layers:
- Layer 1 (phantom): the interpersonal black hole — caring what everyone thinks. The only layer that isn’t real; “believing that it matters is what gives it power over you.” Must be conquered first.
- Layer 2 (legitimate, escapable): specific naysayers (investors, publishers, academics). The answer is Deviance — bootstrap, self-publish, open-source.
- Layer 3 (unavoidable): real institutional dependencies once you’ve had success — partners, customers, regulators. Answer: radical prioritization toward your “ride or die” 1% (Palmer Luckey / Anduril).
