Graeber’s anthropological history of debt, arguing that credit preceded coinage, that the barter origin story of money is a myth economists inherited rather than evidenced, and that debt has always been a moral instrument as much as a financial one.

Why it’s on the list: Named in the “best history book” thread. Whether or not the anthropology holds up in every chapter, it is the book that forces you to defend where you think money came from.
