Daniel Gross
Daniel Gross
Daniel Gross is the co-author, with Tyler Cowen, of Talent (Book) — the talent-evaluation book Kyle reads as practical guidance cross-referenced against other thinking-tool books. In Kyle’s notes Gross “runs the Pioneer tournaments and supplies the ‘rate of improvement over absolute ability’ lens” — i.e. the argument that how fast a person is getting better matters more than their current absolute level of ability. The book also draws on the PayPal Mafia as a Cowen–Gross “talent-vortex” case study.
Context: Daniel Gross is a technology entrepreneur and investor. He founded the search startup Cue (acquired by Apple), ran Pioneer (an online “tournament” to find ambitious people anywhere in the world), was a partner at Y Combinator, and later co-founded an AI compute/cloud venture and worked alongside Nat Friedman on AI investing.
