Daily Observations
Daily Observations
Daily Observations is Bridgewater Associates’ published research letter — the central artifact Kyle points to when he holds Bridgewater up as a Wordsmith culture, an organization that builds itself around writing. In his storytelling research he uses it as a concrete example of “show, don’t tell”: “A cardinal rule of Storytelling is to ‘show, don’t tell.’ … You think Bridgewater publishes their Daily Observations for fun? Find a way to show, not tell.” The letter, in this framing, is how the firm institutionalizes written reasoning rather than merely asserting its views.
It sits alongside Amazon’s six-page narratives, Stripe’s documentation, and Berkshire Hathaway’s Buffett letters as one of the four exemplars Kyle planned to profile in a “Wordsmith Spotlight” series.
Context: Daily Observations is Bridgewater’s long-running daily market-and-economy research note, written for clients and considered a core piece of the firm’s intellectual culture under founder Ray Dalio.
