Company-City Fit
Company-City Fit
Finding the right city for a startup to succeed — treated, in Witnessing the Beginning of A Chemical Empire, as an especially crucial decision for deeptech companies, where a plant, its supply chain, and its talent pool are all physically anchored to one place in a way a software company’s aren’t. The essay’s example is Solugen’s deliberate choice of Houston: a high density of chemical engineers and biochemists, a Houston/Austin cleantech boom, abundant clean energy and water supply, chemical-plant-friendly zoning, and strong shipping/delivery routes. The framing (heard by the author in a public interview with a Solugen co-founder) is that for every deeptech company, answering “where?” makes answering “how?” a lot easier.
Context: the term riffs on “product-market fit,” extending the fit concept from what you build to where you build it — a consideration for City Building as much as for company strategy.
