Collaborative Software
Software designed for real-time multi-user editing. Adding multi-user collaboration to a legacy desktop application is structurally near-impossible: legacy file formats were never designed for simultaneous edits, backward compatibility prevents wholesale architectural changes, and the 100-feature interaction space creates 10,000 simultaneous-edit edge cases to resolve. The Figma acquisition analysis argues that multiplayer-native applications (where the document lives on a server and there is no “file”) represent a genuine discontinuity — Adobe paid $20B for Figma precisely because organic development to match it was not feasible.
