Charles Van Doren

Charles Van Doren is the co-author, with Mortimer Adler, of How To Read a Book — the classic Kyle read with a constant religious-text overlay and explicit cross-reference to his Learning, No Greater Responsibility essay-in-progress. In Kyle’s notes the two authors are treated as a unit (“Adler and Van Doren’s classic”), the source of the book’s framework of reading levels (elementary, inspectional, analytical, syntopical) and its argument for active reading.

Context: Charles Van Doren (1926–2019) was an American writer and editor who joined Mortimer Adler at the Institute for Philosophical Research and co-authored the 1972 revised edition of How to Read a Book. He is also widely remembered for the 1950s Twenty-One television quiz-show scandal.
