Business Incubators

Business Incubators

A business incubator is the organizational structure that gives early-stage ventures shared infrastructure, services, and a network so they can get off the ground. In Your Passion, Your Solution (YPYS) — Kyle’s 2014 business plan for a not-for-profit connecting college students to social ventures — the incubator is the core operating model. YPYS proposes a mixed “HUB/Venture” incubator: primarily virtual, with a small physical facility for conferences, workshops, and a few management-team operations. The model is explicitly drawn from InfoDev’s Mixed-use Incubator Handbook (cited in Appendix F), specifically its “HUB/Venture Incubator” (mixed BAM + virtual) template.

The plan’s distinguishing argument is where in the lifecycle the incubator engages. Most traditional incubators focus on post-launch scaling (startup through expansion); YPYS deliberately targets the earlier ideation-through-startup gap, where motivated students have no infrastructure at all. Incubator services are free for the first two years per incubatee, then move to tiered monthly service fees. Mentorship is one of the named services — each social venture is paired with a mentor experienced in social ventures or the relevant issue, and the pilot explicitly tests whether mentorship is essential to success.

Context: A business incubator is a program (often a shared physical space, virtual network, or both) that supports founders with mentorship, services, funding access, and community during a company’s earliest stages; “accelerators” are a related, typically cohort-based and time-boxed variant.
