Bob Noyce
Co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and later Intel, and one of the central figures in Chip War’s early-history chapters. Noyce independently produced an integrated circuit — multiple components built into a single block of semiconductor material with no freestanding wires — that, alongside Jack Kilby’s, became known as the “chip.” When the Soviet space program triggered a U.S. crash program, Noyce “suddenly had a market for his integrated circuits: rockets,” and by 1964 Apollo computers were running on them with near-flawless reliability.
In the book’s telling, Noyce mattered as much for business judgment as for invention. He declined most military research contracts — famously arguing that “selling R&D to the government was like taking your venture capital and putting it into a savings account… venturing is venturing; you want to take the risk” — and instead slashed chip prices (from $20 to $2 in the mid-1960s, sometimes below cost) to open the civilian computer market. Gordon Moore later called those price cuts as big an innovation as the technology inside the chips. Noyce and Moore “saw no limits to the growth of the chip industry so long as they could figure out mass production,” a line Moore’s Law uses to frame the law as a story of manufacturing and markets rather than physics alone. When the two left Fairchild over its refusal to grant stock options, they founded Intel. Decades later, Noyce diagnosed America’s “death spiral” against Japanese competition and led the Sematech consortium in the attempted turnaround.
