Bob Iger

Bob (Robert) Iger is the Disney CEO and author of The Ride of a Lifetime, which Kyle read in 2022 through the Lily Pads of Your Career and Natural Selection of Time frames. Three threads run through Kyle’s reading: career inflection points are quiet rather than dramatic; “say yes to every opportunity” as a way to maximize surface area for unpredictable upside; and Intellectual Honesty as the rare leadership virtue (“they willfully avoided asking the hard questions”). The book also supplies Iger’s daily operating aphorism — “Don’t say ‘this sucks,’ say ‘this is how this could be better.’” Kyle reads him as an exemplar of Leadership (optimism, decency, presence, knowing what you don’t know) and of the Innovator’s Dilemma choice to cannibalize profitable TV businesses for streaming.

On the Storytelling page, Iger frames narrative as a learnable leadership craft — “structure and pacing and clarity” absorbed from watching Roone Arledge tell sports as “the human drama of athletic competition” — and Kyle pairs him with Elon Musk as a “storytelling beats spreadsheets” figure. He also surfaces briefly in What It Takes as one of the CEOs Stephen A. Schwarzman recruited (as “Bob Iger of Walt Disney”) onto the president’s Strategic and Policy Forum.

Context: Robert “Bob” Iger (b. 1951) was CEO of The Walt Disney Company from 2005 to 2020, and again from 2022, overseeing the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox and the launch of Disney+.
