Big Tech

Big Tech

The cluster of largest technology companies — Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and peers — that define the upper tier of the tech industry in terms of scale, reach, and cultural weight. Shreyas Doshi uses the acronym GAMMA (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon) to refer to this cluster collectively.

Doshi’s thread (against Twitter’s consensus) offers seven reasons why working at a GAMMA corp is worth considering: (1) Thinking Big — instilling the habit of thinking at genuine scale, rare even at startups; (2) Societal Impact — mid/late-career individuals have greater odds of societal impact at GAMMA than at most startups; (3) Financial Security — enabling risk-taking later; (4) Learning Influence — operating in organizations where nothing happens without cross-functional buy-in; (5) Operations — watching generational companies run at peak (Amazon is named as the current generational company); (6) Network — better than most alternatives for those without elite university connections; (7) Balance — flexibility to move fast or slow on your terms.
