Beloved

Morrison’s 1987 novel, set in Ohio after the Civil War and built on the history of Margaret Garner, an escaped enslaved woman who killed her own child rather than see her returned to slavery. Sethe, the novel’s version of her, is visited by a young woman who appears to be that daughter grown up. The book withholds its central event and circles it instead, and the technique is the point: it gives a deliberately fractured form to memory that cannot be narrated straight. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988, and Morrison the Nobel in 1993.

Why it’s on the list: Assigned in UATX’s “Writing and the English Language” course, the final entry in a syllabus of American prose read for craft — Wright, O’Connor, Wolff and then Morrison, whose novel is the most formally demanding of the four.
