Behavioral Patterns in Smartphone Usage Predict Big Five Personality Traits

Clemens Stachl, Quay Au, Ramona Schoedel and colleagues (LMU Munich) 2019 View original ↗

TL;DR — LMU Munich researchers predict personality traits from phone logs alone: calls, app use, music and movement, with no questionnaire.

A preprint from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, later published in PNAS (2020). Most research on individual differences rests on self-report questionnaires; this study records actual smartphone behaviour and uses machine learning to predict Big Five traits from it.

What it is: an academic preprint with a German student sample. Its privacy implications are the reason it gets passed around.
