Barbell Strategy

Barbell Strategy

A risk management framework (popularized by Nassim Taleb) that concentrates exposure at the extremes — avoiding the middle where investors accept moderate risk for moderate return without the upside potential of early-stage or the liquidity of public markets. In a venture/public portfolio context, the barbell has early-stage venture on one end and liquid public market exposure on the other, with the “bar” in the middle (growth rounds, converts, PIPEs) deliberately underweighted. Kyle applies a roughly 45/10/45 split: 45% early-stage, 10% middle, 45% liquid public markets.
