B2B Marketplaces
B2B Marketplaces
A capture concept in the marketplace cluster of Kyle’s June 18, 2026 saved-bookmark batch, alongside the parent Marketplaces page and SaaS + Marketplace. All three share the same seed link — Casey Winters’ essay on the SaaS + marketplace model — and cross-tag one another. The thread is the question of how marketplace dynamics apply business-to-business: matching buyers and sellers among companies rather than consumers, and how a software layer can sit on top of (or seed) the transaction. The concept is captured rather than synthesized; the wiki carries the link and the cross-links but no developed argument yet.
Context: B2B marketplaces are platforms that connect business buyers and sellers (wholesale goods, freight, materials, services). A recurring growth pattern is starting with SaaS tooling to acquire one side, then layering transactions on top — the “SaaS-enabled marketplace” model.

The landscape, and the numbers — November 2022
Two articles read the same day, plus the framing Kyle used in a press interview (November 2nd, 2022 — Stephanie Palazzolo (Business Insider)).
The market: roughly $100 trillion flows between businesses — 4-5x consumer transaction volume. Only 5-10% of B2B transactions happen online; about half still ran through calls, fax and in-person reps in 2022. Projected $3.6 trillion in B2B marketplace sales by 2024.

The structural point both make: these go vertical. A B2B marketplace is tailored to one deceptively large industry — global chemicals alone is $3.8T in revenue. And a marketplace that stays a storefront doesn’t hold; the business is in what wraps the transaction. Factor.io embedding working-capital lending into the purchase-order flow is the pattern, not the exception — the same Capital-as-a-Service wedge Control Points 2.0 describes from the software side.
