A Novel Shell-less Culture System for Chick Embryos Using a Plastic Film as Culture Vessels

Yutaka Tahara and Katsuya Obara 2014 View original ↗

TL;DR — A high-school teacher and a vet hatch chicks with no eggshell, using plastic wrap and a calcium supplement, at better than 50% hatchability.

Journal of Poultry Science 51(3), 2014, a research note from Oihama High School in Chiba and a local animal clinic. Embryos moved into plastic-film vessels after 55–56 hours of incubation, with calcium supplements and oxygen, survived to day 17 at over 90%, and the method beat the 50% hatchability no fully artificial vessel had reached before.

What it is: a short peer-reviewed note. Notable for coming from a high school, and the source of widely shared videos of chicks growing in cling film.
