A Lesson Before Dying

Gaines’s novel of 1993, set in a Louisiana parish in the late 1940s. A young Black man named Jefferson is convicted of a murder he did not commit, after a defence lawyer argues for his life by telling the jury he is no more than a hog. Grant Wiggins, the local schoolteacher, is pressed by Jefferson’s godmother into visiting the condemned cell for the months before the execution, for one purpose: that Jefferson should go to the chair as a man.

Context: First published 1993; winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. 272 pages in the linked Vintage edition. Lexile 750, the lowest in this shard, though the subject is not a young reader’s. Filed under Fiction. It sits in a curriculum about citizenship because it is about dignity that the state has refused to grant and that has to be claimed anyway.
