The first published Zones of Thought novel, built on a premise that is pure systems design: the galaxy is divided into concentric zones where physics allows different ceilings on computation and speed, so superintelligence is possible in the outer reaches and impossible near the core. An archaeological dig wakes a transcendent hostile intelligence, and the survivors crash on a world of dog-like pack minds whose individual members are more like processes than people. It shared the Hugo for best novel.
