5G

5G

One-line definition: Fifth-generation mobile network technology; a demand driver for smartphone upgrade cycles where the network is built out and computing is phone-centric.

How sources describe it

  • In China the 5G network is well established and the overwhelming majority of phones sold are 5G, creating pent-up anticipation that drove a strong 5G Apple iPhone cycle (source: Apple Earnings, An Interview with Jay Goldberg About Chips and Intel).
  • 5G matters more (1) where it is widely available and (2) where most computing — including heavy streaming video — happens on the phone.
