Optimism

Across Kyle’s wiki, optimism is framed as effortful — the harder, more valuable counterpart to the easy default of Pessimism. In the research for The Coward’s Conviction, optimism is the original framing of the essay: “people don’t want to take the time to think about what could happen (optimism), so they default to not thinking at all,” which reads as pessimism. The one-line thesis casts intellectual cowardice — “defaulting to pessimism, refusing to change your mind, and herding toward consensus” — as the easy path, while “optimism is hard work and Conviction is a virtue of heresy.” Kyle pairs this with the Walt/Roy Disney dynamic, the visionary optimist balanced by the pragmatic skeptic, as the source for the essay’s “place for pessimists” section.

In Becoming, Michelle Obama gives optimism a civic and emotional meaning: she keeps herself “connected to a force that’s larger and more potent than any one election, or leader, or news story — and that’s optimism,” which “for me, this is a form of faith, an antidote to fear.” She ties it to showing up — “a handful of votes in every precinct” decides schools, health care, and war.

• Cynicism Is Not A Neutral… (tweet) — Julian Weisser quoting Nick Cave: “Cynicism is not a neutral position—and although it asks almost nothing of us, it is highly infectious and unbelievably destructive. In my view, it is the most common and easy of evils.” This is the sharpest statement in the corpus of the framing this page already carries — that optimism is effortful and cynicism is the cheap default. Cave’s addition is that the cheapness is exactly what makes it contagious.
• Holding A Cynical Worldview Is… (tweet) — the same idea as a personal commitment rather than a moral claim: “there are times where such a view can accurately predict behavior.
