Five and Ten

Why it’s on the list: A contemporary biography of F. W. Woolworth, the clerk who worked out that a store could make money pricing everything at a nickel or a dime, putting the goods where customers could handle them, and replicating the format town by town into the first great American chain. Winkler wrote it close to the events, which is both the appeal and the caution.
