Far Away and Long Ago

Why it’s on the list: W. H. Hudson’s memoir of his childhood on the Argentine pampas, written in his seventies and ill — the open country, the birds, the gauchos and neighbours, in prose that stays concrete about animals and landscape while the world it describes has already gone. A book about attention rather than achievement.

About this edition

Hudson was born on the pampas in 1841 to American settlers and left for England in his thirties, where he became a naturalist and one of the founders of Britain’s bird-protection movement. The memoir was first published in 1918.
