Debt: The First 5000 Years

Why it’s on the list: Graeber’s anthropological history of debt, arguing that credit preceded coinage, that the barter origin story of money is a myth economists inherited rather than evidenced, and that debt has always been a moral instrument as much as a financial one. Whether or not every chapter holds up, it is the book that forces you to defend where you think money came from.
