Why it’s on the list: The anonymous Old English epic — a warrior rids a Danish king’s hall of Grendel and its mother, rules his own people for fifty years, and dies killing a dragon — in Seamus Heaney’s 1999 verse translation, the version that put the poem on general bookshelves.

About this edition

Composed between roughly the eighth and tenth centuries; the sole surviving manuscript dates to about the year 1000. The linked Norton edition prints the Old English facing Heaney’s English (Lexile 1090, a property of the translation rather than the poem). Its place in a formation curriculum is as the oldest long poem in English and as an account of obligation between a lord and the men who fight for him — and of a hero’s reputation as something the community maintains, not something he owns — ending with a people left to reckon with a kingdom whose defence rested on one man.
