Beloved

Why it’s on the list: Morrison’s 1987 novel, set in Ohio after the Civil War and built on the history of Margaret Garner, an escaped enslaved woman who killed her own child rather than see her returned to slavery; Sethe, the novel’s version of her, is visited by a young woman who appears to be that daughter grown. The book withholds its central event and circles it, giving a deliberately fractured form to memory that cannot be narrated straight — it won the Pulitzer in 1988.
