A Suitable Boy

Why it’s on the list: Vikram Seth’s 1,400-page novel of four families in newly independent India around the first general election of 1951–52 — land reform, Hindu-Muslim politics, the shoe trade and a mother’s search for a husband for her daughter, all in one frame. One of the few novels that shows a whole society changing its rules at once.
