A Lesson Before Dying

Why it’s on the list: Gaines’s 1993 novel of a young Black man in late-1940s Louisiana, condemned for a murder he did not commit, and the schoolteacher pressed into visiting his cell so that he goes to the chair as a man. A book about dignity the state refuses to grant and that has to be claimed anyway.

About this edition

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. The list links the 272-page Vintage edition and rates it Lexile 750 — the lowest in its band, though the subject is not a young reader’s.
